Celebrity Cult Survivors: Leah Remini 6/6

Leah Remini defected from the Church in 2013. She is now considered a Suppressive Person. When she made her choice,  she knew she risked her relationships with her mother, husband, and daughter. “I’m ready to walk away from everybody that I’ve ever known and cut ties with my own husband, my own mother, because you don’t know what they’re going to decide. Very often, my experience is people choose the Church.”

Thankfully, her family chose Remini. With their support, she made her split from the church public, and filed a missing persons report with the LAPD regarding Shelly Miscavige. Police closed the investigation soon after, saying they had met with her. Several theories surround the mystery of Shelly’s whereabouts. Most Scientology experts suspect she is alive on a Scientology base near Los Angeles, essentially held prisoner.

Once she defected, Remini began to think more and more of the other former Scientologist/Suppressive Person/ex-wife of Tom Cruise, actress Nicole Kidman. Although the two have never met, Remini found strength and encouragement when she thought about Kidman’s successful career and family life after leaving Scientology.

“While I stared at the dark ceiling at night, unable to sleep, I would say to myself, ‘Remember Nicole Kidman,'” Remini wrote in her book. “‘She was declared an SP and left the church, and she’s doing okay. Her career is still going, and she has a husband and family… Just remember Nicole Kidman. She left and she’s okay…'””

In the time since Remini left Scientology, she has grown closer to her family and appeared with them on a reality TV show It’s All Relative. She has also mended things with her fellow former Scientologist. Katie Holmes released a statement saying, “I regret having upset Leah in the past and wish her only the best in the future.”

“It’s really because we both left that we’re able to have this sort of grace towards each other because we’re back to being human. I had no idea she was going through probably a lot more. Looking back now and seeing her and Suri out there in the world, and her being able to be with her daughter and live her life, I’m touched by it because I know now she did what she did leaving because she had to protect her daughter.”
