In 2006, Remini and her husband were invited to the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, but only on the condition they brought Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony with them. In an interview Remini recounted,“‘Don’t you think you guys should?’ I asked, confused. ‘Well, we don’t really know them that well,’ Katie said.” Remini explained, “The Church was really the one who invited them, on Tom’s behalf.”

While they agreed to attend the wedding together, church officials kept them separated in different cars and at different tables. “They were always trying to extract me,” she said. “I could only assume because they wanted to make Jennifer a Scientologist and maybe I was barring that road for them.”

Remini also reports seeing baby Suri  Cruise crying in a bathroom at the wedding, surrounded by Scientology staffers chastising but not comforting her. Scientology childcare practices include leaving children to cry until they stop. Rather than talking to her in a soothing voice, they kept saying, ‘Suri! Suri!’ in a tone that sounded like they were telling an adult to get her shit together.” Remini gave Suri a bottle, and the other women present wrote her up for rudeness.

Gemini’s gravest offense of the wedding was still to come, when she asked Sea Org members, “Where’s Shelly?” She found it strange Mrs. Miscavige was not present at this major Scientology event, where David Miscavige was Cruise’s best man. Finding herself rebuffed at every turn, Remini continued asking, where the heck was Shelly? Shelly Miscavige has not been seen in public since 2007, shortly after the Cruise-Holmes wedding.

After the wedding, Remini was in trouble with the church. A number of guests and Sea Org members had written her up – for wanting to sit with Lopez, intervening with a crying baby, and most of all asking about Shelly Miscavige. Even the bride, actress Katie Holmes, wrote a knowledge report. “She referred to my behavior during the wedding weekend as ‘very upsetting,’ and accused me of disrupting the party, which she claimed was a ‘poor example to others.’ She went on to say, ‘[She] made the party all about her,’ and concluded the report with reference to the fact that all of this so-called bad behavior ‘disturbed me greatly.’”
