There is a poem
an essay
a story
an academic paper
to be written
on the subject
of how to accommodate
impairment
to celebrate
disabled people
and to eliminate
disability.

It is no disability
to have a visual impairment
of certain types
because the assistive technology
is: wear glasses.

It is a disability
to have a mobility impairment
of certain types
because the world is not set up
to accommodate
the assistive technology,
which is: sometimes,
as necessary,
use a wheelchair.

If we could move
wheelchairs,
AAC devices,
screen readers,
dictation software,
to the same category
as glasses…

Because it is not
impairment
that disables us.
It is
refusing
to admit that an
impairment
does not diminish
our humanity.
